Photography has always been more than just a medium—it is the art of preserving memories. The global journey of photography began on August 19, 1839, when the French government officially announced the Daguerreotype process, invented by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce and Louis Daguerre. From that moment, photography became accessible to the public and quickly spread across the world.
In Nepal, photography was first introduced during the Rana regime when Prime Minister Jung Bahadur Rana brought a camera from his visit to Britain around 1850. Although the earliest photographs taken with that camera have never been made public, this marked the beginning of Nepal’s photographic history.
The first foreign photographer to capture Nepal was Clarence Comyn Taylor from Britain in 1863, who photographed palaces, temples, and the Rana family. Later, pioneers such as Purnaman Chitrakar (1863–1939), Dirghaman Chitrakar, Bakhatbahadur Chitrakar, and Bishnu Dhoj Joshi played a vital role in spreading photography among the general public. In 1909, Bishnu Dhoj Joshi established Grand Studio, the first professional photo studio in Nepal, laying the foundation of commercial photography. The modern phase of photography expanded further in the 1950s when Bakhatbahadur Chitrakar returned from India with formal photography education.
